Rocca di Papa, Rome – May 18, 2025
Today, the 22nd General Assembly of the Society of African Missions (SMA) was officially declared open by the Superior General, Fr. Antonio Porcellato, at the Sacred Heart Spirituality Centre in Rocca di Papa. This significant event gathers 55 delegates, including leaders of the Society’s Provinces and Districts, elected delegates, facilitators, and invited guests, for a time of communal discernment, planning, and renewal.
The day commenced with the formal roll call of members—an act affirming their presence and commitment to the Assembly’s mission. This was followed by the inaugural address of the Superior General, who highlighted the historic and evolving character of the SMA. Notably, 33 members are participating for the first time, and for the first time in the Society’s history, a majority of the delegates are of African origin. The median age of attendees is 51, signaling a dynamic blend of experience and new energy within the SMA.
Fr. Porcellato emphasized listening as a vital spiritual posture for the Assembly, calling it the cornerstone of their shared discernment. He extended a warm welcome to facilitators Sr. Tiziana Merletti and Br. Emili Turù, and expressed heartfelt thanks to the General Council, the Preparatory Commission, and all who contributed to organizing this momentous gathering.
The Opening Eucharist was a highlight of the day, during which the Society’s intentions were offered to God. In his homily, Fr. Porcellato drew inspiration from the calling of Paul and Barnabas, underscoring the SMA’s core missionary identity: set apart to proclaim the Gospel in Africa, with Africa, and from Africa.
This opening ceremony was held in the presence of the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA), who came to express their fraternal support. The congregation was represented by their leadership team, composed of Sisters Mary T. Barron, Marie-Hélène Gourdon, and Anne Falola.
In the afternoon, participants began a session on team spirit and collaboration, designed to strengthen unity and shared mission—an exercise that continues tomorrow.
The Assembly, which will run for three weeks, is a time of grace, strategic planning, and renewal, as the Society evaluates its mission, and looks to the future.
As Fr. Porcellato concluded in his address, “May the Lord be praised, and may Our Lady of the Apostles journey with us.” With these words, he formally opened the 22nd General Assembly of the Society of African Missions.
