The Superior General has officially convoked the Plenary Council of the Society in accordance with Article 104.1 of the SMA Constitutions and Laws. This international gathering will be held at the Domus Fidei Centre, Eucharistic Heart of Jesus (EHJ), located in Allen, Lagos, Nigeria.
The Plenary Council will run from 17 May to 30 May 2026, bringing together the General Council, Provincial Superiors, and District Superiors. In a notable development, all District Superiors will participate in the Council in accordance with Article 94 of GA25. Previously, District Superiors were represented by some delegates, making this expanded participation a new step toward broader representation within the Society’s decision-making processes.
The Council is expected to focus on key matters concerning the life and mission of the Society.
In accordance with Article 105 of the SMA Constitutions and Laws, “The agenda is drawn up by the Superior General, with the consent of his Council, after consultation with the, other members of the Plenary Council. Individuals or groups in the Society may submit suggestions for the agenda.” A first draft of the agenda has already been prepared by the General Council, and the final version will incorporate contributions received from Units and members who wish to before the established deadline of 6 April 2026.
Immediately following the Council, a joint SMA–OLA session will take place from 31 May to 3 June 2026 to commemorate three major milestones:
- the 170th anniversary of the SMA,
- the 150th anniversary of the OLA,
- and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Fr. Planque.
A broader joint session involving Congregations founded by members of both institutes is scheduled from 3 June to 7 June 2026.
The events will also coincide with the diaconate ordination of our seminarians at the SMA Formation House in Bodija, Ibadan on 16 May 2026, shortly before the opening of the Council, marking an important moment in the life of the Society.
The Plenary Council offers a privileged time for reflection, planning, and renewed commitment to the Society’s mission as it looks toward the future while celebrating its historical legacy.
