The SMA Mourns Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume: Scholar, Leader, and Missionary

The Society of African Missions (SMA) mourns the passing of Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume, SMA, who died today, 24 June 2026, at the age of 86, on the eve of the anniversary of the death of our Founder. This proximity to the Society’s memory adds a profound symbolic resonance to his passing, as his life was deeply rooted in the same missionary charism and spirit of evangelization that marked the origins of the Society.

Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume was a missionary, biblical scholar, educator, and former Superior General whose life was marked by a profound love for Scripture and an unwavering commitment to mission.

Born in France, he joined the Society of African Missions and was ordained to the priesthood in January 1966. Throughout his ministry, he served in several African countries, including Togo, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire, where he became widely respected as a missionary, teacher and formator.

His passion for Scripture was evident to all who knew him. For Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume, it was not merely an object of study; it was the source from which he drew inspiration, wisdom, and strength. His scholarship, combined with his missionary zeal, shaped generations of priests, seminarians, and missionaries.

Remembering him, Fr. Didier Lawson recalled his first encounter with Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume in Anyama, Côte d’Ivoire.

I first met Fr. Jean-Marie in Anyama in 1994. He was an exceptional teacher and a renowned specialist in the Acts of the Apostles. For him, the Scripture was not simply an academic subject; it was the very nourishment of his life. He was a man of great discipline, rigor, and high standards. At first, he could appear intimidating because of his seriousness and intellectual depth, but those who came to know him discovered a gentle, approachable, and deeply caring person.”

Beyond his reputation as a scholar and educator, Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume was deeply committed to the African Foundation. Long before the growing African presence within the Society became a widely acknowledged reality, he recognized the importance of empowering African missionaries to assume positions of responsibility and leadership. As Fr Didier Lawson recalls:

Fr. Jean-Marie had profound respect for Africans and great confidence in them. He was among those who worked tirelessly for the establishment and strengthening of the African Foundation within the SMA. He used his intellectual influence, his leadership, and his persuasion to advocate for structures that would enable African members of the Society to grow in responsibility and autonomy. He firmly believed that the mission in Africa would be strongest when Africans themselves were empowered to lead it. Mission was at the heart of everything he did.

A strong believer in formation, Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume dedicated much of his energy to the intellectual and spiritual development of missionaries. He was particularly passionate about ongoing formation and lifelong learning.

He was passionate about formation, especially ongoing formation. He was one of the pioneers of the ICOF programme. He loved to write and continued to do so until recently,” Fr. Didier Lawson added.

Indeed, Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume never lost his love for study and reflection. Throughout his life he continued to write, teach, and share the fruits of his scholarship, remaining intellectually active well into his later years.

Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume also held important leadership positions within the SMA. He served as Vicar General and later as Superior General of the Society from 2010-2013, helping to guide the congregation through a period of transition and growth. His leadership was marked by intellectual clarity, missionary vision, and a profound commitment to the future of the Society in Africa.

Reflecting on Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume’s legacy, Fr. Dennis Etti highlighted the qualities that most distinguished him: “The SMA has lost a member with three great qualities: an intellectual, a visionary, and a believer in the mission in Africa.

Fr. Dennis Etti also recalled Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume’s remarkable ability to listen and to challenge others to think more deeply: “He listened calmly and would always ask the deepest questions. He wanted an SMA with a full commitment to Africa.”

These memories reveal a man whose influence extended far beyond the classroom and the meeting room.

Through his teaching, writings, leadership, and encouragement of future generations, he helped shape the missionary identity of the SMA and strengthened the Church’s mission in Africa.

Today, the Society of African Missions gives thanks for the life and witness of Fr. Jean-Marie Guillaume. He leaves behind a rich legacy as a missionary, biblical scholar, formator, writer, and leader. His love for Scripture, his commitment to formation, his confidence in African leadership, and his passion for mission will continue to inspire present and future generations of SMA missionaries.

May the Lord whom he served so faithfully welcome him into eternal peace.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your master” (Mt 25:23).
