The fourth day of the final week of the 2025 General Assembly of the Society of African Missions (SMA) brought several significant developments, including the elevation of the Kenyan District to Provincial status. While met with satisfaction among delegates, the decision was part of a broader agenda focused on financial stewardship, formation strategy, and greater inclusivity in governance.

Budget for the Next Triennium Approved

The day began with morning prayer followed by a session dedicated to administrative and financial matters. Delegates unanimously approved the Society’s budget for the next three years, covering critical funds such as the Initial Formation Fund, Operating Funds for emerging Units, and the Mission Fund. A separate vote affirming continued contributions to the Common Fund also passed, reaffirming the SMA’s principle of interdependence and financial solidarity among Units.

Discussions acknowledged the disparities in contribution capacity between older and younger Units.

Second International Spiritual Year to Launch in Zambia

A key decision followed with the Assembly voting in favor of a second International Spiritual Year in Kabwe, Zambia. The proposal, presented by the General Council, responds to increasing numbers of candidates in formation across Units and the resulting strain on current infrastructure.

The theme of the week, Missioning: “When he talked with us…didn’t it warm our hearts?”, provided a reflective backdrop. While support for the initiative was strong, one delegate urged caution against letting quantity in formation outpace quality. The vote affirmed the Society’s commitment to deepening spiritual preparation within mission contexts.

Kenya Becomes a Province

The official decision to erect the Kenyan District into a full Province marked a major structural step for the SMA in East Africa. The move reflects Kenya’s growing institutional maturity and sustained missionary activity. The transition is expected to bring more autonomy in leadership and planning, aligning with the Society’s broader push for contextualized mission approaches.

Burkina Faso Status Under Consideration

During the afternoon session, delegates reviewed key topics from previous discussions. Among them was a recommendation that the General Council study the case for elevating Burkina Faso to a Delegation at the next mid-mandate Plenary Council. The suggestion reflects ongoing efforts to reassess the evolving dynamics within existing Units.

Plenary Council Participation Expanded

In a move toward inclusive governance, the Assembly approved the participation of District Superiors in future Plenary Councils, alongside Provincial Superiors and members of the General Council, reflecting a broader strategy of synodality and shared responsibility in decision-making.

A Pilgrimage Ahead

Looking ahead, delegates are preparing for a symbolic pilgrimage in Rome. Tomorrow, they will meet Pope Leo XIV, walk through the Holy Door, and pray at the tomb of Saint Peter—an event expected to mark a spiritual high point of the Assembly.

As the Assembly enters its final stretch, Day Four of the final week of the Assembly will be remembered for its combination of structural advancements, thoughtful planning, and a measured approach to growth—key elements in the SMA’s evolving missionary identity.
