Dear SMA members and associates,

In accordance with SMA Constitutions and Laws, article 70, I hereby convoke the 22nd General Assembly of the Society of African Missions.

The General Assembly will be held from Sunday May 18, 2025, and is scheduled to end on Sunday June 8, 2025. The venue will be at Centro di Spiritualità Sacro Cuore, via Campi di Annibale 137, 00040 Rocca di Papa, RM, Italy.

Setting out for Rome in the middle of the Holy Year, the members of the Assembly will truly be “Pilgrims of Hope” on behalf of the whole Society for the Jubilee Year 2025.

Article 70 clearly defines the aim and purpose of the General Assembly: “to protect the patrimony of the Society, to evaluate its life and work with a view to renewing its energies in the pursuit of its mission, to plan for the future and to elect a Superior General and his Council for the coming term.”

The theme of this Assembly is: “Set apart to announce the Gospel in Africa, with Africa and from Africa!” This theme strikes at the essence of our identity. It urges us first of all to go within ourselves to the spiritual roots of this vocation of “set apart to announce the Gospel,” and at the same time to explore and reflect on our many practical experiences of mission as “going out”  to wherever the Lords leads us in our various Units and particularly in the African continent.

Let’s live the preparatory phase and the celebration of the General Assembly as a true experience of Synodality, walking together as people of God, knowing that so many people whom we serve and live with are praying for this important process of discernment in the life of our Society.

I ask you to read and consider the documents and reflections offered to us and actively participate in the various preparations. I also urge you to use the prayer for the Assembly composed by the Preparatory Commission so that we may be “attentive to the movements of the Holy Spirit in the Church and in the world, and faithful to the ideals of our Founder.” (C & L no. 6)

May this time of preparation deepen our understanding of the current realities and strengthen our missionary commitment. May our generous predecessors in mission and especially our Venerable Founder, Mons. Melchior de Marion Brésillac continue to inspire our projects and decisions. May Mary, Our Lady of Apostles accompany us as joyful witnesses of the Risen Lord, in Africa, with Africa and from Africa.

Given in Rome, 21 April 2024
Good Shepherd Sunday
