Among the Mamanwa: Echoes of a Missionary Encounter

Fr. Krzysztof Pachut, recently assigned to the Philippines, shares his first encounter with the Mamanwa people. From the Diocese of Butuan, this indigenous group, one of the oldest in the Philippines, is rich in its ancient culture, simplicity, and community lifestyle based on respect for elders and nature. Nomadic and peaceful, they bring their unique vision of faith to the local Christian community.

An important part of the pastoral work at the Baleguyenne mission station consists in accompanying the Mamanwa people.
Their history, the way they live, and how they adapt to the modern world immediately reminded me of the Bayaka Pygmies of the Central African Republic.
I had the joy of spending my first visit among them, and my heart was moved instantly, more strongly than ever.
Thanks to the dedication of the catechists and those involved in the parish, relationships based on mutual respect and trust are forged.
This is a sign of hope and a wonderful response to the call of our bishop, for whom the issue of indigenous peoples holds a very special place.
By inviting the Society of African Missions (SMA) in his diocese, the bishop has entrusted us with a special mission: to be close to the Mamanwa people, to accompany them on their human and spiritual journey, and to learn from them.
Numerous challenges , difficult realities … We will do our best, with confidence, faith, and humility.

Krzysztof PACHUT
