80th Anniversary of Bishop Herman’s Death: Legacy of Sacrifice and Faith

Fr. Paul Saah-Dade Ennin, SMA Provincial Superior of Ghana

The St. Michael Co-Cathedral in Keta marked the 80th anniversary of the death of Bishop Augustin Herman, the trailblazing Vicar Apostolic of the then Lower Volta, on April 8, 2025.

The Eucharistic banquet was led by Very Rev. Fr. Paul Saah-Dade Ennin, SMA Provincial Superior of Ghana, who reflected eloquently about the life, mission, and sacrifice of this servant of God.

In his opening remarks, Fr. Ennin reminded us how Bishop Herman was instructed to take leave due to poor health. Sadly, before he could proceed, he was taken to Lomé for treatment, where he passed away on April 8, 1945. His tombstone bears the following powerful inscription: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Bishop Herman lived out his motto “Sicut Miles Christi” – “Like a soldier of Christ”. Fr. Ennin urged the faithful present to pay attention to what Bishop Herman held in his heart: his unshakeable faith, sacrifices for the Church made by him, and spiritual and educational legacy left behind by him.

According to Church history records, Bishop Herman was a leading figure in the establishment of over 2,000 schools under the Vicariate of Lower Volta, marking his great dedication to education and catechesis.

The festival was also an activity included under the 135th anniversary celebration of the Catholic Church in Keta — a twin celebration which greatly brought into focus the evangelization history in the region.

By paying tribute to the memory of Bishop Herman, the Church in Ghana renews its commitment to follow in the footsteps of her early leaders, heed their call with faith, courage and love.
